Gianni CLI

A terminal AI agent that can read context, run tools, and execute real tasks from the shell.

Gianni CLI

The story

gianni-cli started from a simple frustration: most AI chats feel disconnected from what you are actually doing in the terminal. I wanted an agent that lives where I work, understands what I was just doing, and can move from suggestions to real execution. You type gianni "why is my server not starting?" in the same shell, and it reads, runs and answers.

It knows what you were doing

Before it answers, it reads your last 50 shell commands, from zsh, fish or bash, each in its own history format. So "why did that fail?" needs no explanation: it has seen what you ran.

It talks to any model on OpenRouter, free ones included, streams its answer as it writes, and replies in whatever language you wrote in. A question can take up to 20 rounds of tool calls before it has to answer.

You decide how much it can do

An agent that can run commands needs a leash you can adjust. Reading a file is free; writing one, running a command or fetching a URL asks first. On top of that there are three modes: ask, auto, which runs everything, and deny, where nothing happens without your yes. Writing "no restrictions" or "fai quello che vuoi" in a prompt switches that terminal session to auto, and only that one.

  1. 1

    The deny list

In ask mode, a command that contains anything on your deny list always asks, whatever else is true.

  2. 2

    The allow list

A command that starts with something on your allow list runs without asking: git status should never need a click.

  3. 3

    The tool's own rule

Everything else follows the tool: reading runs, writing, commands and the web ask.

One conversation per terminal

Each terminal window gets its own conversation, keyed to the shell it was opened from, so two windows never mix their context. Follow-up questions remember the previous ones, and conversations older than a day are cleaned up on their own.
