The story
Turn your Instagram DMs into an autonomous AI persona that texts like a person. The persona is the easy part: the hard part is everything around the words, when to answer, how long to take, how to split a thought into messages, so that nothing about it feels like a bot.
- of quiet before a burst of messages becomes one
- 10 s
- messages of history it remembers per person
- 25
- conversations handled at the same time
- 5
Timing is the persona
A bot gives itself away by answering instantly, every time. A person answers fast while you are both in the conversation, takes a few minutes after a pause, and much longer if you wrote an hour later. So the delay before a reply depends on how long it has been since your last message, and every delay is drawn at random inside its range.
- you are both in the chat, a reply within 20 seconds7–11 s
- a normal back and forth7–20 s
- you come back after more than 10 minutes1–5 min
- you come back after more than an hour10–15 min
- someone writes for the first time10–30 s

Listen
New messages are collected per person. If you send three short ones in a row, it waits for 10 seconds of quiet and reads them as one.
- 2
Wait
The reply is scheduled for later, by the rules above, instead of being sent now.
- 3
Answer
When it is due, a pool of five workers sends it, so typing to one person never blocks another. A long reply is split into several messages, each with a typing pause as long as the text.

Remember
Every handled message is saved, and messages still in flight are tracked, so a crash or a retry from Instagram never produces a second reply.
Where Bea started
This bot, and the Telegram one next to it, are where Bea started: the first version of the persona that later became ProjectBEA. The ideas that survived are visible there too, like reading a burst of messages as one turn instead of answering each line.
